CAT systems

Present throughout the whole translation process

Computer-aided translation systems – or CAT systems – simplify the translation of complex specialist text. They can, for example, improve the quality of a translation by ensuring that the correct terminology is applied. Translation costs are also reduced because previous translations can be called upon.

CAT software saves translations and terminology in dynamic databases, and displays appropriate text segments for the translator to re-use. This is a fundamental difference to the use of machine translation software. Only the experienced translator is able to convey the correct meaning of a document, together with the appropriate specialist terms, in the target language.

CAT systems have traditionally provided translation memories, terminology databases, translation editors and file converters. A most recent development has seen workflow functions and even direct connection to content management systems (CMS) being increasingly integrated in CAT systems. Furthermore, CAT systems are now also providing functions for measuring and assuring quality. These include checking numbers, punctuation, terminology, spelling and as to whether a document has been fully translated or not. These systems can also assist the translator and proofreader when doing a semantic check on a translation.

We use the CAT system which best suits the client’s requirements and the particular project. For technical documentation, we mainly apply the SDL Trados, across or Star Transit systems. In the case of software localisation, we use Passolo or Catalyst, for example.
